San Antonio Silver Stars fail to overpower New York Liberty again; Lose 76-73 – WNBA Recap (Part 1)
San Antonio Silver Stars might be the break out team this season, but there is one team, they just cannot subjugate - New York Liberty.
All of the five Liberty starters erupted with double scoring figures as they beat San Antonio for the second straight time (76-73) on Friday night.
Two consecutive losses to Liberty are definitely going to set the Silver Stars back in the WNBA standings. Indiana Fever are now ahead of San Antonio by one game. However, the Silver Stars are still at the top of the Western Conference
with seven victories.
New York, on the other hand, after starting the season 2-4, are now on a two-game road winning streak and are looking unstoppable. Liberty is third in the Eastern Conference with a 6-5 record.
Cappie Pondexter and Plenette Pierson continued to pave the way for New York. Pondexter scooped a game-high 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out seven assists to lead Liberty. The 28-year-old also had four steals and
hit 8 for 15 from the field on the night. Pondexter, who is averaging 18.3 points and 5.2 assists per game this season, was brilliant from the three-point range, pinning 4-of-5 treys.
Pierson also recorded a double-double with 14 points and a game best 10 rebounds. The 6-foot-2 centre also blocked two shots and finished the night on a 6 for 8 shooting from the floor.
Pierson acknowledged the combined team effort in their previous two wins and said, "It is definitely a big road win for us." "We have been struggling off and on. It just shows how we can play when we play together."
Forward Nicole Powell ended with 13 points, including two three’s, four boards, four assists and two steals for Liberty, who have won four of their last five games. Leilani Mitchell tallied 11 points and dished out five assists
while Kia Vaughn totalled 10 points, four rebounds and three steals for New York.
Five players of San Antonio also reached the double digits but they could not handle the visiting team down the stretch. Becky Hammon, who is averaging 17.3 points and 6.7 assists per game, had a team-high 18 points, four assists
and three rebounds in the losing effort.
