San Antonio Silver Stars fail to overpower New York Liberty again; Lose 76-73 – WNBA Recap (Part 2)
Jia Perkins was the second leading scorer for the San Antonio Silver Stars with 13 points and four rebounds in the loss. Danielle Adams came off the bench with 12 points and four rebounds while guard Danielle Robinson ended with
11 points, three assists and three rebounds for the Silver Stars, who lost their second consecutive home game to the New York Liberty. Sophia Young, who is averaging 16.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, finished with 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds,
six assists and three steals.
New York shot 32 for 68 from the field, 9 for 21 from free throw line and 3 for 6 from the long range. The home team, on the other hand, shot 27 for 62 from the floor, 5 for 16 from 3-point range and 14 for 21 from the line.
First Quarter
Liberty got off to a good start and jumped out to a seven-point lead, 10-3, early in the first quarter. Perkins’ jumper midway through the period cut San Antonio’s deficit to five-points, 12-7, but the leading scorer of the show
Cappie Pondexter drove to the rim at the opposite end to stretch New York’s lead back to seven points with 04:56 to go in the opening period. The Silver Stars then turned it on in the ensuing passage and scored the next nine points of the opening period to
take a 16-14 advantage with 02:41 remaining in the frame.
Kia Vaughn’s jumper with 01:27 left in the opening quarter tied the game 18-18, but Adams hit a free throw to put the Silver Star ahead by one-point, 19-18, heading into the second.
Second Quarter
San Antonio opened the second quarter on a 6-1 run and sprinted to a 25-20 lead. New York answered right back with 12 straight points and went ahead by 32-25 with 05:16 to go in the quarter.
Young drove to the rim seconds later and Becky Hammon followed her up with a three point play to trim the margin to just two points, 30-32. However, Liberty went on a 5-1 run in the last 39 second of the quarter, taking a 37-31
lead at halftime. New York's defence was unbeatable in the second period of the game as they limited the hosts to just 3 for 13 shooting.
Third Quarter
Liberty extended their halftime lead to nine points, 44-35, early in the third quarter, before the Silver Stars responded with a 14-5 run and tied the game at 49-49 with 03:03 to go in the quarter. Nicole Powell and Pondexter combined
for six points in the last 2:22 of the quarter to give New York a 55-51 advantage, heading into the last quarter.
Fourth Quarter
Liberty’s lead continued to grow in the fourth quarter and stretched to as many as eight points, 72-64, with 03:45 left in the game. San Antonio responded at that point and pounded six consecutive points to make it a two-point
contest, 72-70, with 01:21 to go. Plenette Pierson however came big for the Liberty at right time and scored four consecutive points to put the game out of the reach of the Silver Stars.
