San Antonio Silver Stars hand Tulsa Shock franchise-record 14th consecutive defeat – WNBA Recap
On Saturday night, San Antonio Silver Stars defeated the WNBA-worst Tulsa Shock 72-64 at AT&T Center, handing the Shock their franchise-record 14th consecutive defeat. The victory also snapped three-game losing streak of the Silver
Stars and put them half game ahead of Seattle Storm for the second position in the Western Conference.
Sophia Young led San Antonio with 20 points on an 8 for 17 shooting from the field and 4 for 6 from free throw line. “I am trying to be more aggressive inside,” said Young after the game. “Coach (Dan Hughes) has been getting on
me to take more shots, so that is what I am trying to do.”
Becky Hammon also added 19 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the victory. Hammon shot 7 for 14 from the floor, pinning 2 of 7 three-pointers. Scholanda Robinson had 12 points, three rebounds and two steals
for the Silver Stars, who have won five of their previous 10 games.
Only two Tulsa players reached double figures on the night. Forward Tiffany Jackson headed all the scorers with 27 points and 10 rebounds. She hit 10 for 13 from the field and a perfect 7 for 7 from the line while Kayla Pedersen
had 14 points and five rebounds for the Shock, who have lost to the Silver Stars for the third time this season.
San Antonio shot 46.7 percent (28 for 60) from the field, including 30.8 percent (4 for 13) from three-point range, and 75 percent (12 for 16) from free throw line. Tulsa ended with 46.4 percent (26 for 56) from the floor, including
28.6 percent (2 for 7) beyond the arc, and 83.3 percent (10 for 12) from the line. Shock rebounded better than the Silver Stars though as they grabbed 35 rebounds as compared to just 21 by the hosts.
Tulsa once again could not curtail their excessive turnovers and committed 24 turnovers. San Antonio, on the other hand, committed just 14 turnovers and converted Shock’s turnovers into 22 points.
Silver Stars limited Tulsa to just 21 points in the first half and held a seven-point lead, 28-21, at halftime. San Antonio pushed their lead to 11 points, 46-35, with 02:54 to go in the third quarter before Tulsa went on an 8-5
run to cut the deficit to eight, 51-43.
Shock made a marginal come back in the last period and trimmed Siler Stars’ lead to five, 60-65. However, Hammon responded from down town to stretch San Antonio’s lead back to eight points. That proved to be the final nail in the
coffin as far as the Shock were concerned and they never threatened till the final buzzer.
Despite the defeat, Shock coach Teresa Edwards acknowledged the hard work of her players and said, “That is one of the most positive games we have put together,” “We still had a lot of turnovers. We are trying to eliminate that,
but our execution, the players believing and trusting in one another to execute, was the best game we have had so far.”
