San Antonio Silver Stars overcome Minnesota Lynx 84-75 to square the series 1-1 – WNBA Recap
Minnesota lynx will have to wait to win their first ever playoff series as, after winning the first game of the three game leg, they failed to knock out the San Antonio Silver Stars on Sunday night. The Silver Stars, who were swept
by the Lynx 4-0 in the regular season, proved just too strong for their opponents on the night and courtesy some exhilarating ball play from Sophia Young and Jia Perkins, they finally sorted out the Lynx 84-75.
This win has opened a window of opportunity for the Silver Stars and now they have a chance to reach the second round of the playoffs for the first time in three years.
Jia Perkins and Sophia young stole the show and ended with impressive 24 and 23 points respectively. Becky Hammon also played a significant role with her 18 points.
“I thought our team played amazing. To get a win over Minnesota is amazing, as they are a very good team” A pretty psyched Young said after the victory.
For the losing team, Seimone august ended up with 24 points and Maya Moore chipped in with 16 points. The major part of Minnesota’s struggles was the cold shooting of Rebecca Brunson Although the Lynx centre was dominant on the
glass and ended with game high 16 rebounds; she struggled to find her groove from the floor and ended on a 1 of 9 shooting from the floor.
It was the third quarter which decided the result as Silver Stars used a 17-2 run, which proved decisive and Lynx could not catch up. The Silver Stars also forced 16 turnovers on the night as compared to only 9 committed.
“We knew that Minnesota are at their best in the third quarter, so we came up with a simple strategy to be more aggressive, get our hands on the loose balls and to give as few fouls as possible which I think we successfully did
and it feels good after doing such an amazing job” said Young after the game.
Lynx were kept in pressure throughout the game, a thing, which their coach Cheryl Reeve also admitted after the game ended. The game was evenly poised till the second quarter with scores at 37-40 and lynx only behind by 3 points.
Silver shot 8 of the 16 in the third quarter with Young scoring 9 and Perkins 8, including two three pointers. By the end of the third quarter, the Silver Stars had extended their lead to 64-50. Unfortunately for Lynx, the lead
only kept growing and they were never able to get a hold on the game.
The decider of the three game series is on Tuesday and with the Silver Stars peaking just at the right time, the result of the contest is too difficult to call.
