San Antonio Silver Stars stun Minnesota Lynx with a 93-84 victory at home – WNBA Recap
The San Antonio Silver Stars defeated the Minnesota Lynx 93-84 in a high scoring affair here on Sunday night at the AT&T center.
This was the 5th straight home victory for the Silver Stars and their 5th in 6 games as they improved their record to 7-5 for the season.
Becky Hammon scored 23 points and 8 assists while Sophia Young finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds for the night. Monica Wright led the scoring for the Lynx with 18 points while coming off the bench on a night when a total
of 9 players had double digit points.
“When we play them, it's kind of a playoff atmosphere. We knew today it was going to be a game full of runs. We wanted to hit them in the mouth and we knew they were going to hit us right back. We just needed to stay the course,”
said Jia Perkins of the Silver Stars.
The Silver Stars scored on their first nine field goal attempts including four attempts from beyond the arc and raced away to a 23-11 lead. They were hot from the field going 6 of 7 from the distance for the first quarter. That
helped them take a commanding 35-22 lead at the close of the first period.
The Lynx were shaken up by the surge of points by the Silver Stars in the first period but got back to their game in the 2nd one. They went on an 8-0 run to cut the Silver Stars lead to 42-36. San Antonio went 3 of 9
to open the 2nd period after shooting exceptionally well in the first.
4 straight points by Minnesota to close the quarter had them trailing the Silver Stars 43-47 at halftime. Minnesota outrebounded San Antonio 12-6 in the second period and had 8 free throw attempts compared to just one by the Silver
Stars. That helped them outscore the Silver Stars 21-12 in the second quarter and get back in the game.
San Antonio opened the third period with three shots from the distance to go on a 9-2 run and take a 56-45 lead. It was a close game after that as both teams kept answering each other’s offense. San Antonio led 72-64 at the end
of the third period. A layup by Lindsay Whalen with 5:54 left in the game had Minnesota trailing 74-78.
However, San Antonio did not allow Minnesota to build any momentum or take the lead as they replied with an 8-0 run that extended their lead to 86-74. Minnesota went 0 of 3 and committed 3 turnovers during San Antonio’s 8-0 run
and lost the match then and there. San Antonio eventually hung on to win 93-84.
Shameka Christon finished the game with 17 points while Jia Perkins had 12 points coming off the bench. Lindsay Whalen had 15 points and 3 rebounds for Minnesota while Rebekkah Brunson finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and 4
assists. San Antonio shot 48.4% from the field, 52% from the distance and 85.7% from the foul line on a good scoring night for them. Minnesota shot 49.2% from the field but only had 5 three pointers compared to 13 for San Antonio
“I just think we have some girls that understand what it takes to win close basketball games. Shameka has been in the league for a while, as well as Sophia and myself. We know down the stretch that we want to be good closers,”
said Hannon after the game.
