San Antonio Spurs beat Memphis Grizzlies 89-84 to make it 3-0 – NBA Recap
After a slow start to the season, the San Antonio Spurs have been impressive and on Monday night, they recorded their fifth win in a row by downing the Memphis Grizzlies, 89-84, making it their 3rd straight victory over
Memphis this season.
The Spurs relied on their veterans at the FedExForum. They got seven assists and 21 points from Tony Parker. Tim Duncan was also on song as he recorded a season-high 17 rebounds and five blocked shots along with 19 points.
"Tim (Duncan) has been playing well lately”. Parker said after the game. “He's feeling good. His knee is doing well. Hopefully, he will stay like that. That's a great game from Timmy -- 19 and 17. Those are big numbers at 45 years
old."
Tiago Splitter was also impressive as he scored 14 points coming off the bench with only 19:41 minutes on the field. The Spurs had mixed fortunes in the game overall; shooting rate was 46.6% while netting an inaccurate 66.7% from
the charity stripe. They also committed 19 turnovers in the game.
Marc Gasol paced the Grizzlies with 22 points and 9 rebounds, barely missing his double-double, Mike Conley added 19 and dished out 8 assists. The last player to hit double figures was Rudy g*y with 18 points for Memphis.
The game swayed back and forth and was a well contested affair with neither team fully in control. The Spurs seemed stronger at the start as they took the first frame 26-18.
The Grizzlies came back strongly in the 2nd quarter, but couldn’t claw off the deficit as the Spurs headed towards the half time leading by 52-46. After half time though, the Grizzlies unleashed a 13-0 run. The burst
not only engulfed the deficit but put Memphis ahead going into the final quarter, the score 73-67.
The water shed for Memphis occurred in the decisive quarter as they ended up scoring only 11 points; the season’s lowest quarter score by any team so far.
The Grizzlies coach had to rely upon the four main players Rudy g*y, Marc Gasol, Mike Conley and O.J. Mayo for most of the time. That resulted in exhaustion as they spent 40 or more minutes on the court, which could explain their
dismal showing in the final period.
On the other hand, San Antonio had an early 9-0 run which placed them in a commanding position. With Grizzlies unable to score, Spurs augmented their lead further and as the clock expired the Grizzlies saw the game peter out at
89-84.
