San Antonio Spurs blow away the Dallas Mavericks 93-71: NBA Update
The San Antonio Spurs mauled reigning NBA World Champions Dallas Mavericks in a 93 – 71 win. The Spurs dominated right from the start and delighted the packed crowd at the AT&T Center with Dallas helpless to resist.
Matt Bonner was the surprise leading scorer in the game, coming off the bench to register 17 points for the Spurs. Richard Jefferson also shone 16 points and 7 rebounds while Tony Parker had 11 points and 8 assists.
As good as San Antonio were, the Mavericks were just poor in every department. Their struggles were symbolized by a horrible night out for talismanic forward Dirk Nowitzki. The German star struggled from the field with just 3 of
11 shots made and connected on none from outside the arc. He registered just 6 points, with Shawn Marion scoring just 2 and Jason Kidd going for nought and also left the game with a back pain.
In fact, the only players to get into double figures for Dallas on the night were John Terry and Delonte West with 12 and 10 points respectively.
San Antonio started the game hot, going 10 – 2 in the opening exchanges. A 13 – 4 run then put them up by 15 points, the score 23 – 8 with over five minutes still left in the first quarter. The Mavs just couldn’t get going in the
period and finished the period trailing at 31 – 17.
It was more of the same in the second period as San Antonio showed their ruthless streak, blitzing the Mavs for another 12 – 2 run that stretched their lead to 23 points at 46 – 23 with 3:49 remaining. That would get even worse
by the time the first half ended, with Spurs extending the lead to 55 – 29.
Dallas had a 7 – 0 run in the third quarter but that was pretty much as good as it got for them. San Antonio cruised all along and entered the final period up at 66 – 42.
With the 4th quarter just a formality, San Antonio put their bench players out to get some minutes on the court. The game period was a high scoring one as neither team really concentrated on defence, just going through
the motions till it was all over at 93 – 71.
