San Antonio Spurs demolish the winless Washington Wizards 118-92: NBA Recap
Seven players got into double scoring figures for the San Antonio Spurs, who topped the winless Washington Wizards 118-92 here at the Verizon Center Monday night. The Spurs are now 8-1 on the road, NBA’s best away record this season.
Boris Diaw led the Spurs with 16 points, Tiago Splitter added a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with 7 assists while Tony Parker chipped in with 15 points for the winning cause.
Jordan Crawford top scored for the Wizards with 19 points, Kevin Seraphin posted 18 points and hauled down 7 rebounds while Martell Webster chipped in with 16 points. The Wizards went 0-12 after this defeat; they remain the only
winless team in NBA this season. They also became the 12th team in the NBA to go down 0-12 at the start of the season.
The worst ever start to a season is held by the New Jersey Nets when they went 0-18 in the 2009-2010 season, with their current form the Wizards are inching close to this record very swiftly.
Washington started the proceedings well; a 7-0 run capped off by an A.J. Price’s shot from behind the arc put them up 7-2. A Trevor Ariza layup pushed their advantage to 11-5 but the Spurs found their rhythm soon enough and a Gary
Neal driving layup reduced the deficit down to 14-15. The score was tied on 17 all before the Spurs started pulling ahead later in the period and were leading 29-25 at the end of the quarter.
The Wizards got off to a great start in the second period and a 7-0 run put them up 32-29 in no time. Score was tied on 34 after a Crawford layup for the Wizards, but the Spurs started to roll and Neal knocked down a three pointer
to put them up 46-38. The Wizards made it a two point game on 48-50 but the Spurs closed the period with a 10 nil burst that had them leading 60-48.
The Spurs did not allow the Wizards to come close as they kept increasing their advantage. A 10-0 quick run pushed their lead to 82-61 at one stage and went into the final quarter leading by 92-70.
This commanding lead allowed Gregg Popovich to rest some of his key players in the final period, as they were exhausted coming into this game after their double overtime thriller yesterday night. Still the Spurs cruised to victory
and outscored the Wizards 26-22 in the final period.
Matt Bonner sank a three pointer to push the Spurs up 97-72 early in the period. Crawford scored 9 straight points for the Wizards but it was just too little too late as the Spurs went on to win 118-92.
