San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green is heading to Slovenia: NBA Update
San Antonio Spurs Danny Green is heading to Slovenia this fall. There had been a lot of speculation recently about Green’s affiliation with a Slovenian basketball club in Ljubljana and it seems that those speculations have turned
out to be true.
Green himself confirmed this news when he left a brief message on a social media website.
“Its official, I will b going overseas to play in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Wana thank all spurs fans for Ur support for the few months I've been here, I will b bak wen lockout ends if organization wants me bak. I leave in a wk...If
u got the # bbm fb etc...Hit me up...till then keep me posted n let me kno wen this bafoonery ends lol. Crazy thing is (heels fans)...I get to play with my bro @DeThompson9 again over there lol...we on the same team hahaha, gon b lot of fun.”
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is still in lockout situation and this lockout is forcing many league players to play overseas during lockout. Danny Green is another subject of this work stoppage and has decided to play
in Slovenia in this fall. He is also the first player of the San Antonio Spurs who has signed an official contract with an international basketball club in Europe. No other players in the Spurs’ roster have yet made their desire to join foreign teams public.
The international move of NBA players has been eased by the FIBA, the international body of basketball. Last month, FIBA ruled that the NBA players can play for foreign clubs during the lockout as long as they include an opt out
clause in their contracts, so that they can return to the league, whenever the players union and the NBA owners reach a deal over the new Collective Bargaining Agreement or CBA. Danny’s contract with the Slovenian Club includes the opt out clause.
The EuroLeague club Union Olimpija with which Danny has signed a deal currently has his former Tar Heel teammate Deon Thompson. Danny Green has spent almost two years in the league, with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Spurs. His
last year’s performance remained below par as he could not receive much playing time from the Spurs. He played total eight games in the 2010-2011 regular season with an average of 5.1 points per game.
