San Antonio Spurs looking at the possibility of landing Kevin Garnett – NBA News
The San Antonio Spurs are not used to adversity or having their backs against the wall. They have been one of the most successful franchises in the NBA over the past decade having won four NBA championships in the past 13 seasons.
This year, the Spurs were poised to win yet another title after they dominated the NBA for much of the second half of the season and entered the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder having not lost a game
in the post season - on an 18 game winning streak. Gregg Popovich’s game strategy seemed to be unbreakable.
However, the Thunder thought otherwise. After losing the first two games, the Thunder bounced back to win four in a row and eliminate the Spurs from the playoffs. Just like that, the historic run of the Spurs ended in disappointment
and questions are now being raised about their future with Tim Duncan, the power forward, perhaps the greatest of all time, around whom the team has been built for so many years, nearing his retirement. Duncan is a restricted free agent this summer as well.
However, there has been a new movement in the Spurs team management and the prospect of the Boston Celtics All Star forward Kevin Garnett joining the Spurs has become bright. Spurs insider Buck Harvey recently said:
“The Spurs will consider everything and everyone this summer when free agency begins. But one option tossed out this weekend by one in the Spurs organization is not just another name. Kevin Garnett.”
The news comes as a surprise as Garnett and Duncan have known to not get along that well. But with a coach like Gregg Popovich and a chance to win an NBA championship in probably the last season of their career, both players will
easily put their differences aside, if there are any.
Before Garnett can be landed, the Spurs will need to resign Duncan. However, that will not be a steep task as Duncan has said before that he is not leaving San Antonio anytime soon. A combination of Garnett and Duncan will make
an intimidating front court combination for the Spurs. Although the team will have to work out how the minutes will be shared and who will take over the centre position, the prospect of the two players joining forces must be giving other NBA teams chills down
their spines.
Garnett’s Celtics were ousted by the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals and his quest for one more championship ring came to an abrupt end. Considering that the Celtics now have an even bleaker chance of winning the championship
with the age factor in their roster and competitors such as Chicago Bulls and Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference, Garnett may actually opt for the Spurs, if given the opportunity. Having the two legendary forwards in the team, the Spurs will become instant
championship contenders next season.
