San Antonio Spurs on the verge of making NBA History
Sweeping the first two series of their post season campaign and looking at the prospect of extending their run of 18 wins further ahead are the rampant San Antonio Spurs.
This Spurs team is on a roll at the moment and whoever has so far gotten in their way has been bulldozed. They swept past the Utah Jazz in the first round, and their second round opponents were handed a similar fate and now only
Oklahoma City Thunder stand between them and the NBA finals.
Does this Spurs team have what it takes to go undefeated all the way to lift the Larry O Brien trophy? The answer to that question may be yes considering the way they have been performing and especially since the closing stages
of the season. They have won 29 of the last 31 games and have not tasted defeat in a while.
How have they been doing it? Well mainly it has been due to the fact that head coach Gregg Popovich has found the perfect winning formula and he has been making the right rotations at the right time. He has mixed together several
young guys like Danny Green and Kawhi Leonard with a bunch of experienced players in Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker and Tim Duncan, who have a large amount of experience on their hands to lead this team.
Even Popovich admits that this team to be a lot deeper than the previous 4 championships sides.
“We’re a deeper team,” - Gregg Popovich said.
As the current situation stands, the Spurs are eight wins away from writing their names down in the history books and be considered as all time greats. They have been phenomenal with their displays; they run every possession to
perfection and no one seems to be capable enough of stopping them at the moment.
While discussing the prospect of being very similar to the team that made its way to four championships with the first one coming in 1999 and the last coming in 2007. Tony Parker clearly stated that you can’t compare anything until
it’s done completely.
“We don’t have any secret. We don’t even think about it, Until we go all the way, I can’t compare this team,” - Parker said.
Team mate Tim Duncan echoed a similar kind of tone;
“It feels a lot like some of the other championship teams. In saying that, we haven’t done anything yet, we’ve won two rounds. We haven’t done anything so you can’t qualify, or classify our team as anything other than that we’ve
gotten this far.” – Duncan
One thing that has been different for the current Spurs unit from their predecessors is the amount of points that are expected to come from the trio of Duncan, Parker and Ginobili. The trio has not been stretched under the present
setup as every player on this team is more than capable of scoring.
Role players like Tiago Splitter and Garry Neal have been spectacular in the post season so far and have carried the bench scoring for San Antonio. These two along with the latest acquisition of Stephen Jackson have helped the
Spurs cause on nearly every occasion in the post season.
So do the Spurs have a chance of going down in the history books, well Duncan believes, they have a chance and ‘The Big Fundamental’ is known for saying what he means. He has averaged 17.6 points to along with 9 rebounds in the
post season has helped the Spurs become the only team standing at the moment who are averaging over 100 points in the playoffs.
