San Antonio Spurs sign Danny Green
The San Antonio Spurs announced on Wednesday that they have signed free agent and former Cleveland Cavaliers forward Danny Green, but the terms of the deal were not revealed.
Green, who was drafted by the Cavaliers as the 46th overall pick in last year’s draft after a championship run with North Carolina, averaged 3.3 points in four games during the pre-season,
but Cleveland waived him earlier this season.
Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich believes that the 23-year-old guard-forward’s shooting ability and defensive toughness will make him a good fit for the Spurs, who are having a great start
this season, winning in nine of their first ten games.
“He’s a talented young man who has impressed us with his combination of pretty good defensive skills and awareness and a pretty good shot,” Popovich said. “He is a young guy who, in time,
is going to be a good player. Sometimes it takes somebody two, three, four years before they find the right situation”
The veteran head coach also said that he consulted with former Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry and head coach Mike Brown about Green, and both of them gave positive recommendations,
which prompted them to sign the former North Carolina standout.
“Danny Ferry had good things to say about him and Mike Brown liked his work ethic,” said Popovich. “With a young guy, oftentimes it’s just getting a chance. He is obviously well coached by
Roy Williams at North Carolina and we like his skills, so we get him in the fold for a while and see what we think.”
To make room for Green, the Spurs waived Alonzo Gee, who only averaged 0.4 points and 0.6 rebounds in five games for the Spurs this season. Green will likely make his season debut when the
Spurs go up against the Utah Jazz on Friday 19 November in Salt Lake City.
