San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli crashed Jorge Lorenzo at Assen – MotoGP news
San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli crashed defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo in the first lap of the Iveco TT Assen Grand Prix in Netherlands.
The Italian ran into a high side and slipped in front of Jorge Lorenzo. While being too close on the tail of Simoncelli, the Spaniard was out of margin to save him from the fall.
The Italian’s first crash was with Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa which ended with a collarbone fracture for the Spaniard. Super Sic repeated his mistake this time with Lorenzo. The incident was instantly discussed considering the Italian’s reckless riding
style.
Another reason for the Italian’s accident is said to be the cold tyres which lacked proper grip. The Italian was apologetic about the crash and also admitted that he was riding harshly.
Simoncelli said, “It was the first left hander, the asphalt was cold and, although I don’t think that I went in too hard to get past Lorenzo, I felt that I couldn’t hold back because I was third and close to the front two. There was time though, and I could
have waited. I am unhappy to have caught Lorenzo up in my crash and can only apologise to him.”
His last point of satisfaction was that he managed to restart the race and came home with some points and ninth place finish after a hard struggle. His bike was missing many parts after the crash as he continued to race with a broken tail end. He claimed
it to be a bad incident and hoped to focus on the remainder of the 2011 season.
Yamaha Factory Racing rider, Jorge Lorenzo still fought back to move into the front pack. He paced up and made several overtakes to position himself behind the Repsol Honda and Ducati duos. Lorenzo finished at sixth place slipping to a 28-point gap from
championship leader Casey Stoner.
The Spaniard commented on the crash, “Of course Simoncelli doesn’t want to throw me off the track, that wasn’t his intention but I think he is not very conscious about the risks in this class with these tyres.”
In Lorenzo’s opinion, Simoncelli has matured his riding style and learnt to evaluate the situation in a better way.
Lorenzo feels contended with his sixth place finish and some points from the event. However, he will be looking to win more races soon in order to keep himself in the run for the 2011 championship.
