San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli finishes fifth in Mugello – MotoGP news
San Carlo Honda Gresini rider Marco Simoncelli scored a fifth place finish at his home event held over the weekend in Mugello.
Despite of his first row start, he missed his first MotoGP podium finish at the recently held Gran Premio d’Italia.
Simoncelli said, “It was a very tough race because it was really hot and the track conditions were new to us, so I didn't have the same feeling as in practice. The front three were able to set a slightly faster pace, I was able to hang on for six or seven
laps but after that I lost touch.”
Super Sic added that he was struggling to gain the lead in fight with Ben Spies. In the final battle, Spies had the benefit of being fast around the corners which he availed and overtook Simoncelli from the inside curve.
However, as the race day ended, the Italian rider conceded that the race was not very good for him. In term of completing the race, the Honda Gresini team declared that the home race weekend was a positive one.
Simoncelli said that whenever he is riding in top five riders with short time gap between them he feels a potential to cover it and moves ahead. He added as the situation turns around and if the riders are riding far apart, he heads into a dramatic situation
ruining his race, losing all the opportunities to succeed.
Meanwhile, the Japanese rider at Honda Gresini, Hiroshima Aoyama rode as a substitute for Dani Pedrosa at the previous Assen GP. However, Aoyama was back with his Italian team for the Mugello event.
Aoyama said, “Unfortunately this weekend was a tough one for me because I am still struggling with the injuries from Assen. My starting position wasn't good and that made the first half of the race more difficult, but I managed to pick my pace up in the
second half.”
All MotoGP teams will have a test session following the race day at Mugello. Let’s see how they all fare in it.
