San Carlo Honda Gresini riders Simoncelli, Aoyama conscious about tyres at Motorland Aragon – MotoGP
San Carlo Honda Gresini riders Marco Simoncelli and Hiroshi Aoyama are conscious about choosing the right tyres for the Motorland Aragon Grand Prix.
The 14th MotoGP event will be held as a third Spanish event of the 2011 MotoGP season.
The Italian rider completed the Honda RCV dominance while ranking at fourth position in the practice session time sheets. He was positioned between Repsol Honda riders Casey Stoner, third and Andrea Dovizioso, fifth.
Simoncelli said, “Unfortunately we can't really draw too many conclusions from just an hour on track but things didn't go badly, other than a few small problems in braking and with corner speed. We are lacking rear grip and the tyre goes off after just a
few laps.”
Super Sic is of the opinion that the Bridgestone slicks are too soft for the Aragon track surface. The tyres only survive for a few laps which will be a big problem for the raceday, he said. Simoncelli added that the team is also trying to sort out the fuel
consumption issue.
On the cancellation of the second free practice session, Simoncelli expressed his displeasure with the turn of events.
Super Sic’s teammate, Hiroshi Aoyama was tenth in the first outing for the Motorland Aragon event. The Japanese rider was also facing same issues as his teammate.
Aoyama said, “We tried some things this morning and did some work with the set-up and my feeling was pretty good, even though Aragon is not an easy circuit. Tyre wear is unpredictable and making the right choice for the race will be crucial.”
However, he was still far better than his fellow satellite Honda rider Toni Elias. Even though the tyres were wearing out very quickly but the Japanese rider extracted good results from the event. The team was not entirely happy over the cancellation of
the second practice session of the race weekend.
Now the team aims to get the best setup for the qualifying round which will also suit them for the raceday. They also aim to sort out the fuel consumption issue with their bikes before the raceday. Let’s see how they fare on Sunday.
