San Carlo Honda Gresini will not race in Valencia GP after Marco Simoncelli’s death – MotoGP news
San Carlo Honda Gresini team will not take part in the final event of 2011 MotoGP season, taking place at Valencia, Spain.
The Valencia GP is due to take place on November 6, 2011.
The decision was taken following the death of its rider Marco Simoncelli. The Italian rider had a fatal crash at the Sepang International Circuit during the penultimate round, Malaysian Grand Prix, last Sunday.
While talking to an Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport, Fausto Gresini said, “The crash was caused by a sequence of incredibly negative circumstances, the bike that moved towards the inside of the turn instead of the outside, being run over on the widest
track of the season.”
Apparently, the team has confirmed not to race at Valencia and even will not take part in the post-race test sessions.
The Honda Gresini squad is left with a tough decision to make. The team has to look for a new rider that could pilot their 1000cc Honda RC213V in 2012 MotoGP.
Currently, Repsol Honda rider Andrea Dovizioso is in a contract with Monster Yamaha Tech3 team for the 2012 season.
The 24-year old rider had a low side fall but did not lose his bike and partially gained the grip. He was hung on his RC212V while veering the way of Colin Edwards of Tech3 and Valentino Rossi of Ducati Team.
With no margin to react or steer away, Edwards followed by Rossi slammed into Italian’s machine. The American rider ran over his body, whereas Rossi had a violent shake but escaped falling.
On the other side, Edwards had a hard fall from the hit and sustained a dislocated left shoulder.
Gresini further added, “Everything happened so fast. I'm lost for words. I know our job is dangerous, that risk is part of the game, but you always hope nothing happens. When it does happen and you find yourself in the middle of it, everything changes, it's
difficult to accept it.”
After the tragic accident, the team has no spirit to race at the season’s final round but it will attend the event to pay tribute to the young Italian rider.
