San Diego Chargers GM A.J. Smith critically evaluates himself – NFL News
The New York Giants won the last Super Bowl leaving 31 other teams behind. In the National Football League (NFL) title game, they defeated the New England Patriots, who had won the American Football Conference (AFC) championship to reach the Super Bowl.
There were many other teams in the league that played well but could not make it to the title game. Some were eliminated in the playoffs and some were sent packing even before.
But for San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, every such team that did not win the title is a loser. Winning the title is the only thing that matters to him and it is something that he has never done in his nine-year association with the team.
According to U-T San Diego, Smith said:
“When you don’t win a world championship, are you not a loser? The New York Giants won the Super Bowl. Call me crazy, but everyone else lost. That’s all that matters to me.”
During Smith’s tenure, Chargers reached the playoffs five times but they were not even able to win any conference championship.
Rather than blaming anyone else for the team’s failure, Smith has held himself accountable for the team’s inability to win the title and he is not happy at all with this. He said:
“But I got hired to win a world championship and I haven’t done it. In my view, it’s not going at all well. When I sit back and assess myself, I’m disappointed. Nine years and no world championship. Five trips to the postseason and five failures, and I don’t like it. It’s what drives me.
Chargers have never won any Super Bowl title. They registered four consecutive playoff appearances since the 2006 season, but still could not make a memorable impact.
They registered their last playoff appearance in the 2009 season and are struggling to even qualify for the playoffs now.
In the last season, they won and lost eight games respectively and were tied with Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division. Broncos eventually made it to the postseason from the division.
Smith is rightly frustrated, but his job is to find the solution rather than the problem, which is known to everyone.
