San Diego Chargers and former Denver Broncos receiver, Eddie Royal, join hands – NFL News
San Diego Chargers have given a three-year contract to former Denver Broncos’ wide receiver, Eddie Royal. The deal, which was announced on Thursday, March 15, 2012, is reportedly worth around $13.5 million including $6 million guaranteed money.
Royal started his professional National Football League (NFL) career in 2008 with Broncos. He played his rookie season as starter and gained 980 yards for five touchdowns on 91 receptions in 15 games.
However, his performance went down during the next three years.
In the next season, he started 12 games while playing 14 and gained 345 yards on 37 receptions. In the 2010-11 season, Royal played 16 games and started 10. He registered a total of 627 yards and three touchdowns on 59 receptions.
In the last season, he started eight games while playing 12 and managed 155 yards and a touchdown on 19 receptions.
After getting a deal with Chargers, Royal was excited and said that he always respected Chargers as an organisation.
While sharing his views about Chargers as an opponent when he was playing for Broncos, Royal said that he always expected a tough game.
He said:
"I'm just happy to be with a great organisation. I've always had a lot of respect for the San Diego Chargers. Whenever we had to play them, we knew it was going to be a tough game, a hard-fought game, a high-scoring game, one that would come down to the
fourth quarter. We knew they would be a well-coached, tough football team to play.”
He added:
“When I got the opportunity to join them, I knew that I really had to give them a serious look."
During the last season, Chargers managed an impressive start and won four of their first five games. However, they went on to lose six games in a row and registered a comeback later by winning four of the last five games.
Chargers ended at second spot in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division after winning and losing eight games respectively and could not qualify for the playoffs.
Broncos was the only team to qualify for the playoffs from the AFC West division, and Chargers are now hoping that addition of Royal will certainly brighten their chances in the next season.
