San Diego Chargers begin hunt for a new general manager – NFL News
San Diego Chargers have started interviewing the candidates for the general manager (GM) post.
Chargers president Dean Spanos has consulted the former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf as the consultant in hiring the new GM.
Chargers fired both head coach Norv Turner and general manager A.J. Smith on Monday, December 31.
Among the candidates for the job, Chargers director of player personnel Jimmy Raye is on top of list and reportedly had an interview on Tuesday.
Wolf was asked whether any candidates were interviewed outside the organisation to which he replied that he had no knowledge about it.
Raye has been with the Chargers for 17 years and knows how the system works in the franchise’ administrative ranks.
However, Raye is not the only one in the list of candidates for job. According to different reports, the list of candidates includes San Francisco 49ers’ Tom Gamble, Atlanta Falcons’ David Caldwell, Indianapolis Colts’ Tom Telesco and Arizona Cardinals’
Steve Keim.
Meanwhile, Wolf has been busy receiving calls from the candidates available for both the posts. According to the Associated Press, Wolf said:
"My phone hasn't stopped ringing. That's an indication of how the people within the league view the opportunity to go to work for the Chargers... The game's gone by me. From a standpoint I'm talking about of endurance, I don't have that anymore, like I used
to have."
Wolk has the record of hiring quality head coaches. Working as GM of Packers, Wolk hired Mike Holmgren as the head coach which led the side to two back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. Wolf further said:
"At some point you're going to come across the guy that just knocks your socks off. When that happens, you know you've reached the person you want to hire.”
Chargers have already announced that interviews for the candidates of both GM and head coach posts will be carried by Spanos, Wolf, director of college scouting, John Spanos, and assistant general manager Ed McGuire. Chargers issued an statement on Monday,
which said:
"(Team) will remain as flexible as necessary to attract the best possible candidates for both positions."
