San Diego Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright returns, RB Ryan Mathews skips practice – NFL News
After a gap of one month, San Diego Chargers cornerback Shareece Wright returned to the field on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Meanwhile running back Ryan Mathews, left tackle Jared Gaither and right tackle Jeromey Clary remained absent from practice.
Wright entered the team’s practice session for the first time after getting injured in Chargers’ season opener against Oakland Raiders, which they won by 22-14.
Gaither was expected to miss the practice session after straining his groin during Week 5 game against New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October, 07, 2012.
It was surprising to see Mathews and Clary not participating in practice as they gave no indication during the last week’s game that they got injured.
After the practice session, Chargers head coach Norv Turner spoke to the media, but did not give any details about reason behind Clary and Mathews sitting out the session. Turner said:
“I’m confident that they’ll all be able to play. But we will give an official injury update tomorrow.”
Turner told reporters that all three players, who missed the practice, are likely to play in the Chargers next tie against Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday, October 14, 2012.
The coach also reaffirmed that Wright’s availability for Sunday’s game will depend on his output in the practice field. Turner carried on and said:
“We have to see him practice for three days. As always with a guy that has an injury, we have to get him through practice and see him in the morning and make sure he doesn’t have a setback. If he can play I think he would be a guy that would have the chance
to become active”
Before his injury, Chargers were hoping for a breakout season from Wright. The second-year pro was looking in superb form during the preseason games.
The cornerback was very happy for his return and looked determined to make progress and return to regular season games. Wright said:
“It felt good to be back.  I’m pushing through it and trying to test my limitations to see how much I could go.”
