San Diego Chargers cut offensive tackles Anthony Davis and Mario Henderson from roster – NFL News
San Diego Chargers have made the finals cuts to put up their 53-man roster before the end of deadline on Friday, August 31, 2012.
There are some names that stand out from the list of players being cut. Among those are two recently acquired offensive tackles Anthony Davis and Mario Henderson.
Chargers first added them to the team in order to be the backups for the two starters Jeromey Clary and Jared Gaither.
The release of Henderson and Davis vastly reduces the depth at the offensive tackles position. It looks like head coach Norv Turner was not much satisfied with the output of his two veteran tackles.
In the absence of these two veterans, Chargers’ only backup is rookie Michael Harris, who was added into the team as an undrafted free agent this offseason.
Harris will likely get the opportunity to start the Chargers' season opener on Monday, September 10, against Oakland Raiders. Harris played two of the four preseason games.
Starter Gaither is out of game Week 1 due to back spasms. Guard Tyronne Green could also start for Chargers if they choose him rather than Harris.
Athough Chargers seem to have lost a great deal of experience from the roster with the release of Davis and Henderson, coach Turner has some others plans in his mind as the teams cut off their 75 man roster to 53. Turner said:
“There's going to be good players that have been released by other teams. The hardest thing is it's got to fit, and we've got a game to play real shortly. The number one goal right now is to compile the best 46-man roster.”
Coach Turner was asked on Friday whether he would take the opportunity of adding some other offensive tackles released during the cuts by other teams in order to increase the depth at this postion. Turner’s reply was:
“If we can add a guy that's obviously capable and ready to play, yeah, but to add a guy just to add a guy? No. That's not what we're looking to do.”
