San Diego Chargers’ defence hoping for better performance in next season – NFL News
The San Diego Chargers made a good start to the last National Football League (NFL) season, but they collapsed halfway through the season and despite recovering well, they were unable to qualify for the playoffs.
While realising their responsibility, some members of the team’s defensive squad have expressed optimism about next season as they hope for the team to be in a better shape.
During the 2012 NFL draft Chargers selected seven players out of whom four were drafted for different positions on the defensive line.
In the last season, Chargers won four of their first five games and four of their last five. However, they lost six games in a row in between those victories and ended the season with winning and losing eight games respectively.
Chargers’ defensive tackle, Luis Castillo, who has been playing for the team since starting his professional NFL career in 2005, was certainly not pleased with the last season’s results, but he is hoping to overcome the flaws this season.
He was of the view that the offseason workout, organised team activities (OTAs) and preseason games would help the players get in proper shape and rhythm.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, Castillo said:
“It’s a challenge when you spend a season doing all the work but not getting any of the gratification. It’s good to be doing football-related activities again with the team and on the field. I’m extremely encouraged by how things have gone.”
On the other hand, defensive end, Antonio Garay, who is going to play his fourth season for the Chargers in 2012, has expressed hopes of getting a relatively good result this time, especially in the presence of young players.
Garay, who himself has been playing in the league since 2003, was of the view that the new players should adapt to the system soon and the veterans should help them so as to develop good team chemistry.
He said:
“We have a good group of guys. A lot of camaraderie. A lot of talent. We expect the older guys to do exactly what they’ve always done. Continue to lead. And we expect these younger guys to fill even a bigger role this year than they have in the past.”
