San Diego Chargers general manager A.J. Smith shows concern after team’s woeful performance – NFL News
After a humiliating 24-35 defeat against Denver Broncos in Week 6, general manager A.J. Smith has publicly come up and criticised his team for not playing well.
Talking to the U.T. San Diego on Wednesday, October 17, 2012, Smith accepted complete responsibility for the defeat. He said:
"It was an embarrassing and humiliating performance by a team going in the wrong direction fast. We have dropped three out of our last four games (and lost) on back-to-back national broadcasts. We are about as low as a team can get right now and going into
the longest bye we will ever experience."
Smith has rightly accepted the blame for the Chargers’ woes as he is the man behind building up this team.
However, there seems to be a silent message for head coach Norv Turner, who is expected to be shown the door at the end of the season if Chargers fail to qualify for the playoffs. Smith went on and said:
"We have some outstanding, talented players on this team and some outstanding coaches across the board, but obviously we cannot play as a team. We appear to not be able to handle adversity or finish games.”
Smith will also be feeling the heat. His team gave way a massive 35 points in the second half against Broncos after leading the first half 24-0.
Chargers (3-3) certainly have some homework to do as they head into bye week. There is still a lot of time left for them to make a turnaround.
The offence has shown its calibre on many occasions, but there is a lack of consistency.
Losing is one thing and humiliation is another. Chargers lost their way in the second half last Monday and this is something that will be under consideration for Chargers owner Dean Spanos.
Turner recently sacked his defensive coordinator, but the coach could also be sent packing if the team fails to improve in coming weeks.
