San Diego Chargers’ guard, Kris Dielman, announces retirement – NFL News Update
San Diego Charges’ guard, Kris Dielman, has finally announced retirement from the National Football League (NFL), ending his career after playing professional football for just nine years.
While announcing his retirement, which was a hard, but a crucial decision, he was emotional and dejected when he addressed the press conference on Thursday, March 1, 2012.
The attendees included his family members, teammates, coaches and media personnel.
Dielman was forced to call it quits owing to the risk of aggravating the present or receiving further head injuries.
During the game of the last NFL regular season against New York Jets, Dielman received concussion in the final quarter.
Initially it was not determined whether the player had received the injury as he did not leave the field and continued playing. However, on his way back home, his health deteriorated and he was hospitalised later.
He could only play six games in the season and missed the last 10.
While announcing his retirement, he said:
"I've got to get out when the getting out's good still. It wasn't worth what would happen if I would have kept on playing. I've got a beautiful family I want to be around. I live in a great place, so I want to enjoy it. It's been a great nine years. I had
a lot of fun, a lot of memories."
While acknowledging that another hit could pose serious threats even to his life, Dielman was ready to move on.
He said:
"I don't want to have any more problems, or have problems as I get older. I played a rough style of football. This one got me and I've got to move on."
Meanwhile, the Chargers have accepted the decision open heartedly.
Chargers’ president, Dean Spanos, appreciated Dielman’s services for the team saying that he played with heart and passion.
The president also backed the player’s decision and said that he had made a right call.
Spanos said of Dielman:
“Today he's making family his top priority, as it should be, and I respect him tremendously for that.”
Not just the president, Chargers’ coach, Norv Turner, and quarterback, Philip Rivers, also acknowledged the player’s service and respected his decision.
Dielman has not clearly informed anything about his future plans yet.
