San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner explains why he started running back Jackie Battle – NFL News
San Diego Chargers did not start with their star running back Ryan Mathews in Week 4 game against Kansas City Chiefs which they won 37-20. They started with running back Jackie Battle which led to many rumours about reasons behind keeping Mathews on the
sideline.
Chargers head coach Norv Turner cleared all those speculations on Monday, October 01, 2012. He also gave the reasons behind playing with Battle through most of the game.
There were speculations about sitting out Mathews after his performance in Week 3 game against Atlanta Falcons.
Mathews fumbled at a crucial time of that game, which ultimately led to Chargers’ defeat.
However, Turner explained that was not the case as playing Battle gave his team better chance to get settled into the game and win. Turner said:
“Everyone thinks it is to send the guy a message, but the best thing for us in the Kansas City game was to start Jackie Battle and give him and our offense a chance to get into some rhythm. On a feel when it was the right time, we wanted to give Ryan the
opportunity to be a part of it. As the game went on he became a big part of it. He understands the importance of taking care of the ball.”
Turner was very happy with the way things have gone in the game. He praised both players for giving good performance.
Battle finished the game with 15 carries and caught four passes. On the other hand, Mathews utilised his limited playing time very well and carried the ball 14 times for 61 yards.
Moreover, Turner indicated that the combination of both running backs will likely be used regularly in coming games. Turner carried on and said:
“I liked the mixture we had. Ryan came in on the screen and got a big play early.”
Playing both Battle and Mathews could also mean more competition for the playing time which will ultimately lead to better performances.
Mathews will more likely get more playing time in Chargers next game as they face New Orleans Saints.
