San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner insists not to be on hot seat despite recent woes – NFL News
San Diego Chargers are going through a dismal spell of performance and many have indicated that Norv Turner’s tenure as a head coach is about to end.
However, Turner does not believe this is the case. Talking to the reporters on Monday, October 29, 2012, Turner made it clear that he is not living dangerously. He said:
"You're coaching on a week-to-week basis, I'm coaching to do the best job I can to get our team ready to play Kansas City. All those other conversations, they're going to take place. You know they're going to take place."
Taking the tasks on a weekly basis does not necessarily means that Turner’s job is secure. His team has failed to carry on after a winning start to the season.
Chargers (3-4) have lost their last three games and things are getting from bad to worse. In their last game, Chargers failed to score even a single touchdown and lost 6-7 against underachieving Cleveland Browns.
The offence has not been the only cause of concern for Chargers as the defence has given away too many points in the second half.
Due to this, Chargers have lost many games despite putting up good lead in the first half. Turner admits that his team needs to work on many fronts. He said:
"Usually, it's a different thing in each situation where you have an opportunity to make a big play. You only get so many in a game. One play it might be protection, one play it might be we didn't make the throw we wanted to make, one play it might be we're
still trying to get on the same page.”
Chargers are now a game behind the American Football League (AFC) West leaders Denver Broncos.
Fans are calling for Turner to be sacked along with general manager A.J. Smith, who was the man behind hiring Turner as the head coach.
Turner went on to say that he had not talked about his job with Smith and team president Dean Spanos.
Even though it is highly unlikely that Spanos will make a desperate decision of firing Turner, the team’s performance in coming games will definitely determine the head coach’s long-term future.
