San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner not keen to criticise quarterback Philip Rivers – NFL News
Despite a diminishing show by quarterback Philip Rivers during a woeful 24-35 loss against division rivals Denver Broncos in Week 6, San Diego Chargers are not making him a scapegoat for the rest of the team.
Chargers head coach Norv Turner came out on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, and discussed what went wrong in the game that they could have easily won.
Turner said that the team is working on ways to decrease the large number of turnovers that became the major reason behind the team’s collapse in the second half against Broncos. Turners said:
“We can eliminate them. We’ve done that in the past. That will be our complete focus as we go through this bye. We’ve been a big play team and an (attacking) team, but we’ve got to find a way to keep that part of our game and again eliminate the negative
plays.”
Broncos came back from a 24-0 deficit to mark an extraordinary comeback, thanks to lacklustre performance by Chargers offence in the second half.
Rivers threw his career-high six turnovers which included four interceptions and two forced fumbles. Five of his turnovers came in the second half.
However, Turner believes that Rivers was not the only one to be blamed for the team’s all woes. Turner said:
"If you want to make this about somebody, it's not about one of the guys in there. Make it about me."
Chargers have completely lost the tempo after this loss as they head into bye week. This might affect their performance in the second half of the season.
Although Chargers are currently 3-3, as do the rest of the teams in American Football Conference (AFC) West, they need Rivers to stand up and show leadership on the field. Talking about his performance last Sunday, Rivers said:
"It was mostly just poor throws. I wasn't fooled out there once today. The first interception, I didn't see exactly how it ended.”
Maybe the Chargers got complacent in the second half against Broncos. The team has a lot of work to do in the bye.
