San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner shows his support for quarterback Philip Rivers – NFL News
San Diego Chargers and their turnover-prone quarterback Philip Rivers are now in more pressure to perform well as the team lost another game after getting in a winning position. However, head coach Norv Turner is in no mood to side his favourite snapper.
Turner was present in the press conference on Monday, November 12, 2012, after going through the team’s first practice session of the week.
He reiterated that team is not ready to make any changes at quarterback as he believes that Rivers is giving his best. According to the Associated Press Turner said:
"You know, Philip Rivers gave us a chance to win that game. He made so many plays that a lot of guys can't make. It's hard for me to answer that question because I just don't think people have an understanding of what that question means.”
Chargers lost their Week 10 tie against Tampa Bay Buccaneers by 24-34 with Rivers being the main culprit in giving away the possession.
In his latest debacle, Rivers threw a pass directly towards Buccaneers cornerback Leonard Johnson who returned it for a massive 83 yards to reach the end zone and gave his team an insurmountable 10-point lead in the final quarter.
Many of the fans and critics are demanding Rivers be benched due to consistently making errors on the field. Rivers has thrown 40 turnovers in previous 25 games.
In this case, Turner has a valid point as he has no other options at quarterback. The backups are not capable enough to put up good a pass completion rate regularly. Turner further said:
"He wouldn't be going out there and completing 82 percent of his passes over the last two weeks if he wasn't spending an unbelievable amount of time in his preparation and helping other guys prepare. It's frustrating for him; it's frustrating for all of
us. We're spending a lot of time working on it."
Moreover, Rivers’ performance is affected by the porous offence that has failed to stop the opposing defence from putting pressure on the quarterback.
Chargers' offensive line is currently playing without its two best starters due to injuries. It includes offensive tackle Marcus McNeill and offensive guard Kris Dielman.
