San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner tells offensive line to give better performance – NFL News
San Diego Chargers offensive line has not been able to effectively safeguard their quarterback Philip Rivers and that has been the case throughout the season. Now, Chargers head coach Norv Turner has come out and addressed the situation publicly.
During a press conference on Monday, November 19, 2012, Turner took up this issue and said that the offensive line’s lack of stiffness has hurt the overall out output of Rivers. Turner said:
“We are used to having success offensively. We’re used to scoring a lot of points and we’re used to moving the ball. And that probably doesn’t fit with where we’re at right now. When we can, we take that aggressive nature and there’s sometimes that we can’t.”
Rivers has struggled whenever he has to throw the ball. It looks as if problem with the offensive line has been lingering for years.
In his last 26 games dating back to the 2011 season, Rivers has thrown a combined 47 interceptions and fumbles.
The offence has its own issues to deal with as starting left tackle Jared Gaither is currently out due to injury.
This season has been particularly turnover-prone for the Chargers offence. The offensive line has allowed 41 quarterback hits and has given way 26 sacks, which is right now the seventh highest in the National Football League (NFL).
The running game is also affected as running back Ryan Mathews is having an average of just 4.1 yards per carry this season.
Turner also acknowledged that he is getting worried about Rivers as the quarterback has got so many hits this season. Turner said:
“Yeah, I am (concerned for his health). I think that in the quarterback position all you have to do is look at two weeks ago and there are three or four guys who are lying on the ground with concussions or separated shoulders or whatever.”
These comments have come at a time when Chargers have got their second defeat against American Football Conference (AFC) West opponents Denver Broncos.
The team lost 23-30 to Broncos in Week 11 last Sunday and will have an uphill task of facing in-form Baltimore Ravens in Week 12 on Sunday, November 25.
