San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram regrets giving away critical penalty in Week 5 – NFL News
Although a highly controversial call by referees changed the momentum of the game, San Diego Chargers linebacker Melvin Ingram accepts that it was his mistake that led to the penalty in Week 5 game against New Orleans Saints on Sunday, October 07, 2012.
Chargers (3-2) were 24-14 in the third quarter when linebacker Demorrio Williams returned an interception to reach the end zone.
However, the touchdown was nullified by the referee due a penalty by Ingram for roughing the passer. Chargers then went on to give away 17 points to lose the game. Talking about that penalty, Ingram said:
“I take full responsibility for the personal foul. It was just the refs doing their job. That comes with playing hard. It was my bad and it was something I’ve got to learn. It was a tough lesson to learn but it’s a lesson that’s got to be learned.”
Chargers could have led the game 31-14 during that play had Ingram not received the penalty. Moreover, giving away 17 points after that pivotal moment has raised many question on the defensive team.
Head coach Norv Turner must now put emphasis on the point that his team must defend the lead in any situation.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees looked comfortable with the opposing defence for the first time this season.
Veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes told the media during his postgame interview that although the momentum was shifted after that incident, it was not the main reason for the defeat. Spikes said:
“If you can minimize their momentum swings and maximize yours, those are the times you pull out the win. Over the course of the game there are five or six plays that define the outcome. But at the end of the day, not one certain play will dictate the reason for losing.”
Although Chargers have started the season well, all their three wins have come up against easy opponents. Chargers must add strength to their defensive line if they need victories agianst tougher opponents.
