San Diego Chargers performance report – NFL Special Part 2
San Diego Chargers’ performance analysis continues as we now look at their performance in Week 4, 5 and 6 of the regular season.
Chargers came into Week 4 with a 2-1 record and looked to recover from a thrashing 3-27 loss against Atlanta Falcons.
The offence had not been very explosive in three games so Chargers were hoping to get better performance from their star running back Ryan Mathews.
On the defensive side, Chargers had been very inconsistent. Not a single player in the defensive team had managed to give outstanding performance.
Week 4: Kansas City Chiefs
Chargers blasted away Kansas City Chiefs with a 37-20 win in Week 4. A strong Chargers defence forced Chiefs to commit six turnovers, out of which five came in the first half.
It was a blistering performance by Chargers offence in the first half that became the basis of their win.
Chargers finished the second quarter with a 27-6 score line which made it difficult for Chiefs to make a comeback.
Quarterback Philip Rivers got a superb 18 of 23 for 209 yards and scored two touchdowns. Also, running back Jackie Battle produced stunning performance as he scored both passing and rushing touchdowns. He carried the ball 15 times for 39 yards.
Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel played well as he finished with 24 of 42 for 251 yards but let his team down with three interceptions in the first half.
Chargers inside linebacker Donald Butler returned an interception for 21 yards for a touchdown.
Week 5: New Orleans Saints
It was a shameful performance by Chargers as they gave the struggling New Orleans Saints their first win of the season.
Saints won the game 31-24 after a record-breaking performance from their quarterback Drew Brees, who threw a touchdown-pass for 48th consecutive game. He completed 29 out of 45 passes for 370 yards and scored four touchdowns.
Chargers were leading the game 24-21 at the end of third quarter, but lost the lead in the final quarter as Saints scored 10 points in the span of six minutes.
Rivers’ good performance was swiped by his tendency to give away turnovers. He finished with 27 of 42 for 354 yards, but also gave away an interception and a fumble.
Week 6: Denver Broncos
It looked like a game where Chargers’ season got upside down. Facing their divisional rivals Denver Broncos, Chargers got a 24-0 lead in the first half but went down to lose the game 24-35.
Broncos marked the fourth biggest comeback in the history of the National Football league (NFL).
They scored 35 points in the second half, thanks to five touchdowns which included an interception as well as fumble returned for a touchdown. Quarterback Peyton Manning led the Broncos’ revival as he scored three touchdowns.
Although the offence gave Chargers the best possible start, it went into vain as the defence looked shell shocked in third and fourth quarters, while the offence went under the cage.
Rivers gave his career-high six turnovers which included four interceptions and two lost fumbles.
