San Diego Chargers’ quarterback Philip Rivers wants to develop good understanding with his receivers
San Diego Chargers’ quarterback, Philip Rivers, wants to develop good chemistry with his receivers, particularly Robert Meachem, who has recently joined the team and might get the starting role in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season.
Rivers is of the view that it is essential for any quarterback to develop good understanding with his receivers so as to improve the on-field coordination.
Since Meachem has recently joined the team, Rivers feels that it is the right time to understand him and work out with him later during the offseason activities, training camp and preseason games.
According to the North County Times, Rivers and Meachem want to know each other well before stepping on the field together.
Rivers said:
"The timing of routes will come, but the process of getting to know each other is underway. It's about communicating and developing a rapport."
Last season, Rivers struggled with his pass accuracy and drew criticism from all the corners. This time around, he does not want to repeat the failures and that’s why he wants to have good understanding with his receivers.
He said:
"There are so many little things that go into a successful passing game, and this time helps build a foundation of knowledge and a rapport that will help us down the road. This is the first step, and I can't wait until we go up against a defence in OTAs,
and take that next step as a group. It'll keep building and should take off in training camp and be great by the time the season starts."
Meanwhile, Meachem has also said that he wants to have good understanding with Rivers so as to improve his game-play.
Meachem has been playing for the New Orleans Saints since starting his professional career in 2007, but he was never able to become the regular starter.
If Chargers give him the position of their regular starter, it will add pressure on the receiver, but he wants to live up to the expectations.
He said that he wants Chargers to win the Super Bowl in the upcoming season, and to achieve that goal, he said, it is essential to have strong relationship with the quarterback.
