San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews back in practice field – NFL News
San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews was cleared for practice on Friday, November 16, 2012. It is delightful news for the offence as the team gears up to face American Football Conference (AFC) West opponents Denver Broncos in Week 11 game on Sunday,
November 18.
Mathews had a limited workout on the practice field and is listed as questionable for the upcoming game. The team is hopeful that if the player continues to recover at a fast pace, he will play on Sunday.
It was Mathews’ first practice session this week after getting a neck injury during Week 10 game against Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The running back had a major collision with Buccaneers linebacker Quincy Black who ended up having a season-ending neck injury.
Talking with the team’s official website, Mathews said that he felt comfortable during the game, but started to feel the pain on the neck after the game ended. Mathews said:
“It just got real tight on the plane and real sore. That was a big hit we both took.  It was real, real sore at the time so they just gave me a couple days off for it to settle down and relax a little bit…I never really (stayed away from practice) though.”
If Mathews becomes available for the Broncos game, it will have a massive effect in the overall outlook of the team.
The running back has a good record against the division rivals. In two games last season, Mathews ran for 262 rushing yards and scored a touchdown against Broncos. When asked about his record against Broncos, Mathews said:
“It’s nothing special, and I couldn’t really tell you why (I’ve done well against them). I think I’ve done well against other teams too.  So I couldn’t really tell you most of my big games are against Denver.”
Mathews has rushed for 475 yards on 112 carries in seven games this season and has scored a single touchdown. Even he is not at his best, Mathews still makes a big difference in the running game.
