San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews cleared for contact – NFL News
San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is expected to return to the field as he was cleared for contact on Thursday, September 13, 2012.
Mathews practised with helmet and pads on for the first time since getting injured five weeks ago.
The running back did not participate in full practice session as he skipped the team drills, and his exposure was limited on the field.
Getting clearance for contact was the biggest hurdle in Mathews’ return. This will certainly boost his chances of playing in Week 2 game against Tennessee Titans.
Ryan broke his clavicle during the first preseason game on August 02. He did a few exercises on Monday during the practice session, but made advancement on Thursday as he did some light reps and individual drills.
Mathews himself was delighted to return. He has been working very hard to get back to full fitness before the given timetable. According to his doctors, the player will take four to six weeks to fully rehabilitate from the injury.
Although he is hoping to play in Week 2 game, his participation will be subjected to approval from the team doctors and head coach Norv Turner. Mathews said:
“I want to play, but it’s up to coach. We’re just going to take it day-by-day, and we’ve still got a few days and practices left. I’m going to be out there with those guys, I’m just happy to be back and with the team. The trainers and everybody think I’m
healing up fine. I’m exactly where I want to be, but ultimately it’s up to coach Norv’s decision.”
Even with all the tough work Mathews was unable to play in the Chargers’ season opener against Oakland Raiders. It was very frustrating for him. Mathews carried on and said:
“It’s kind of like being a caged lion. You want to be out there, but you’ve got to be patient and take the time it takes. It’s a broken bone, so I had to wait.
Chargers offensive game will get a boost with Mathews' return as he was influential in the offensive output of the team last season.
