San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews frustrated due to limited carries – NFL News
San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews came out in public and expressed his concerns on Monday, December 03, 2012, about the lack of carries given to him during Week 13 tie against Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, December 02.
Mathews carried the ball for the season-lowest nine times during the game on Sunday. These are the fewest attempts Mathews has made in a game since November 2011. Giving his views about the lack of opportunities on the field, Mathews said:
“I would (like more carries). That’s me. But, I’m going to do whatever I can and do whatever I’m asked for the team. Whether that’s two carries or 25 carries, no matter what it is. I’m going to try to make the most of my opportunities and help the team
win.”
Mathews finished the game with a mere 26 rushing yards and failed to score a touchdown. With their top offensive player not at his best, the Chargers are now relying more heavily on the passing game.
This has frustrated Mathews as for the first time in his career the player is not the focus of attention.
It has been a disappointing season for Mathews. Without any doubt, the player has struggled throughout the season to perform well.
Mathews got a bad start to the season and after recovering from an injury he has never looked like a player he was before.
After giving a Pro Bowl calibre performance in the 2011 season, Mathews has piled up just 594 yards on 146 carries this season, scoring only a single touchdown in 10 games.
This is a drastic reduction in the output as compared to last season in which Mathews finished with 222 carries for a massive 1,091 yards and six touchdowns. Speaking of his current form, Mathews said:
“The only thing I can pinpoint is me. I have to make the most of my opportunities. I’m not getting 20-25 carries a game, but the carries I am getting I have to make the most of them. It all starts with me and the boys.”
