San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews likely done for the season – NFL News
There is a little chance that San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews will be able to play again in the 2012 season after the player broke his clavicle for the second time this season during 7-31 defeat against Carolina Panthers in Week 15 on Sunday,
December 16, 2012.
Chargers head coach Norv Turner announced that Mathews broke his left clavicle during the second quarter of the game.
Mathews only carried the ball four times for 22 yards before leaving the field. The running back started the season getting the same injury during the season opener against Oakland Raiders.
At that point, Chargers estimated that Mathews would take four to six weeks to recover and the player fought hard to get back on the field within that period.
It has been an unfortunate season for Mathews who has struggled to get going due to injuries. Giving his views about Mathews’ injury, Turner said:
“It’s crazy to me to be around one guy who had one (hurt) clavicle, much less two, and obviously the way he fell and landed going sideways was very similar to the way he fell. I don’t know how to describe it in terms of what you call tough luck or circumstances,
but hopefully he can put them behind him because he is a tough player.”
It is highly unlikely that Mathews will be able to return before the end of the season. Turner also spoke about the replacement Chargers have in place of Mathews. Turner went on and said:
“Well, we’ve got a chance to get Ronnie Brown back. Jackie (Battle) will get a chance to play. And Brink (Curtis Brinkley) played some yesterday, though I don’t know that he would play on third down.”
Mathews has 184 carries this season for 707 yards and has scored just one touchdown. Veteran running back Ronnie Brown would be an ideal replacement for Mathews. Brown has carried the ball 36 times for 169 yards.
Mathews was drafted by Chargers as 12th overall pick in 2010. The running back received a Pro Bowl selection in the 2011 season.
