San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews says he will be ready for season opener – NFL News
It looked frightening when San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews went on the ground within the first few minutes of the first preseason game against Green Bay Packers on Thursday, August 09, 2012.
Yet, Mathews seemed very positive about his road to recovery when talked with the media on Sunday, August 12.
"I think I heal pretty fast. I think I'll be good in time to play against the Raiders.”
Mathews covered just five yards on his first carry of the game when he had a bad landing. He went off the field shortly after that.
He had an X-ray which showed a broken clavicle. Mathews went on to have a surgery on Friday.
During the press conference, Mathews looked as if he did not have any injury apart from the bandage that he had. He even moved his arm to show his condition. He said:
"My legs aren't broken. I can still do stuff with my legs and everything. It's more just upper body stuff that I'll probably have to shy away from, but my legs work just fine."
Mathews’ stance for his return to the field contradicts with what Chargers have said about his schedule for recovery. Chargers medical staff has reportedly given a four to six week schedule for the player’s recovery.
In absence of Mathews, Le’Ron McClain will most likely be the starter. Head Coach Norv Turner has other options in form of Ronnie Brown and Curtis Brinkley.
Mathews is hoping to have a stellar of a season this year. It has been a tough week for him going through injury just before the start of the season.
"You work hard and then something like that happens. But I figure I'm getting them all out of the way right now, and then I'll have the whole season, a long season, to look forward to. ... It's just something that happens.”
Chargers will play their first game of the season on September 10, against Oakland Raiders. Mathews will have to satisfy the Chargers medical staff before getting clearance to step on the field.
