  1. I would get two rods and reels.  One for jig casting and one for live bait fishing.  For the jig rod, I would go with an 8 foot medium action conventional rod with a high speed reel like a Penn 505HS Jigmaster loaded with 30# mono.  For the live bait, I would fish with a 6 foot light/medium conventional rod with a reel containing 20# mono.  You'll need live bait hooks ranging in size from 2 to 4/0.  Make sure you bring an extra spool of 20# with you just in case your line gets messed up.  You can get all the info and equipment you need from H&M or Point Loma Sportfishing.

  2. Good answers above. However, each rod/reel outfit will run you $100-$200 or so, which is kind of steep for a single fishing trip. The landing rents rods for something like $15-$20 per trip, and unless you're planning to get out fishing regularly, it's probably the best way to go.

If I had to go with one outfit, it would be a 7-8 foot fast-action rod with 20 or 25 pound monofilament on a fast conventional reel, and I'd plan on fishing with bait all day. Jigs are fun, but usually you get more fish on bait.

If you're jig fishing, my favorite surface iron is the Tady 45, but I get more yellows fishing the yoyo iron, generally a Salas 6xJr. The tackle shop at Fisherman's Landing (2 doors east of H&M) has a great selection of tackle, though I think all three landings sell the basics.
