San Diego Padres, Oakland Athletics make four player exchange - MLB News
The San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics finalised a trade deal on Friday with the Padres exchanging left-handed pitcher Andrew Werner and infielder Andy Parrino for Athletics’ Minor League first baseman A.J. Kirby Jones and right-handed pitcher Tyson
Ross.
Andrew, a native of Peoria, Illinois, made his Major League debut in later part of August in 2012 when he was called up from Triple-A Tucson. He had a mixed Minor League season with a 5-10 win-loss record and 3.70 ERA in 22 starts. A similar pattern was
seen in his eight starts with the Padres, where he had a 2-3 record and a 5.58 ERA.
The pitcher, who attended Illinois Central College, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Padres in 2010. He pitched for several farm teams in the organisation during 2011 and 2012 before getting a call up from the Padres.
Tyson, who made his Major League debut with the Athletics in 2010, has had limited opportunities at the highest level. The 25-year-old from Berkley, California, is considered to have a good command on four pitches including a mid 90’s fastball and a useful
slider.
He enjoyed success with Triple-A Sacramento where he managed a 6-2 winning record with a 2.99 ERA, starting in 13 of the 15 matches he pitched in. His Major League season was a horror story though. He had a 2-11 losing record in 18 games, starting 13 of
them and posted a 6.50 ERA.
The right-handed pitcher has so far had a 6-18 losing record in the Major League with a 5.33 ERA in 53 games, 21 of them as a starting pitcher. He was drafted by the Athletics in 2008 in the second round of draft. His younger brother, Joe, also is a part
of the Padres and pitches in their farm system.
Infielder Andy Parrino has so far represented San Diego Padres in 79 Major League games in 2011-12. The right-hander has an average of .200, an on-base percentage of .319 with 10 career RBI’s and a single home-run.
He will be a candidate for the shortstop job at the Athletics. He took the role of shortstop in 26 games for the Padres and played the remaining 29 on various infield positions for the ball club. He also played 65 games for Triple-A Tucson and had an impressive
batting average of .328 with 32 RBI’s in 2012.
Kirby Jones can prove to be good trade for the Padres in the long run. The first baseman had a .248 batting average in 2012 along with a .382 on-base percentage and a .461 slugging average. Kirby also went long 21 times and managed 61 RBI’s in 115 games
for Class-A Stockton in 2012.
We can certainly expect to see some more trades before the teams finalise their rosters. The trades in this case look good for both ball clubs.
