San Diego Padres’ Chase Headley well on the recovery trail - MLB News
There is good news for the San Diego Padres and their fans as star hitter Chase Headley is all set to make a comeback to the game after a thumb injury that he received during Spring Training on March 17. Luckily for the Padres, the switch hitter did not
need surgery.
He played as pinch hitter for the Class-A Lake Elsinore and is expected to take the field on Sunday. The team management was encouraged to send him to play in the Minors after he showed promising signs in a session at Petco Park, the home of the Padres.
The San Diego ballclub has been struggling of late and has posted a 2-8 win-loss record thus far. The team made a brilliant comeback last year by winning 49 of the last 86 games after the All-Star break. Chase was an instrumental part of that turnaround.
Manager Bud Black has been encouraged by the proof he has so far seen on the fitness of the third baseman. He said that the player has shown promising signs and he seems to be ready for the rehab stint.
"Chase was making good, gradual strides every day, especially over the past week," Black said. "He kept passing tests in the batting cage and with his field work, that led us to believe he was ready and able to make a rehab start. We were encouraged by what
we've seen, and that he's full ready for this opportunity.”
The manager saw a lot of positives in his condition and the reporting by the medical staff.
"Chase feels good about it. The medical staff is encouraged by how his thumb is healing. He's doing well, and this is a real positive step for Chase and this ballclub," Bud said.
Last year Case Headley made good use of his immense talent and although could not take his team into the post-season, he gave them many reasons to cheer.
The fans and the ballclub itself would be hoping that he can make a speedy recovery and can make a comeback. A good show by Chase can be a great help in a successful season for the Padres.
