San Diego Padres Manager Bud Black talks about new ownership, general managers- MLB News
San Diego Padres’ manager Bud Black has had a long affiliation with the home city of his ball club. It is the city where he attended college and played ball for the San Diego State. It is a city where he has raised his family and is grateful for that and
intends to pay back in a big manner.
"This is the town where I've raised my daughters. I feel very grateful to be able to manage this team. There's nothing I'd want more than for us to win -- to win a championship here," Bud has recently said.
He has been in charge of the Padres and has mostly seen unsuccessful returns at the end of the season. The last season, however, saw the resurgence of the San Diego ball club where the team posted a 49-37 winning record in the last 86 games.
He recently discussed that and many other issues with the MLB.com.
When inquired about the recent changes in ownership and its overall effects, Bid said that it was a tough question to respond to but the emphasis he put was on consistency from everyone and a constant surge for improvement in the game had to be focused upon.
He believes that the position of manager can be a volatile one and it is times such as these that the head has to be kept calm and things have to be managed steadily.
‘’Believe me, I know the position of manager is one that at times can be very volatile. My approach through all this more than anything has been to be a consistent, steadying force as much as possible,’’ Bud said.
About the change in general managers, he said that the best way to go about it is to be yourself and maintain clear communication with whoever is above you. He said that he tries to stay in touch with all those he has to be in touch with and it’s the way
to move forward in his position.
‘’I've just basically tried to do my job regardless of who was (or is) above me. I never felt like I had to reinvent myself based on the situation. I've just kept plowing forward,’’ Black said in the interview.
He also said that he was honoured by the show of confidence by the owners of the team who have extended his stay at least until the end of 2014 season. Bud said that he feels a strong sense of loyalty towards the Padres Organisation.
Bud was also pleased with the new ownership group to be committed to taking the team forward. The ownership group includes Ron Fowler, the Seidler family and the O’Malley family, who were previously the owners of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It is indeed a pleasure to have a clear picture of the man in charge of the San Diego Padres. Bud Black certainly has a very clear vision of how he wants to carry the team forward and that is certainly not a bad thing.
