San Diego Padres’ Rymer Liriano is raring for the big leagues - MLB News
Rymer Liriano is a seriously good prospect of the San Diego Padres’ future. The 21-year-old was rated as the Number 1 prospect for the Padres by MLB.com. He joined the Padres in 2008 and has been moving up the ranks ever since. Liriano was put on the 40
man Padres’ roster in November 2011.
He started off with the Class-A Advanced Lake Elsinore and was moved to the Double-A San Antonio for the latter half of the 2012 season. He has learned a lot from the experience and has sharpened his baseball skills. Currently playing in the Arizona Fall
League, the player will get a further chance to mature and learn from some of the best coaches around and play against some very competitive individuals.
The player himself is committed and is willing to grab an opportunity to play in the big league if provided with a chance. "I'm really ready," he said when inquired about the possibility of playing in the Major Leagues next season. "I've been consistent.
You have to ready because you never know."
He was MVP in the Midwest League and was also named the Prospect of the Year in 2011. The same year he made it to the Topps and Baseball American All-Star line-up. The outfielder proved his mettle for the Lake Elsinore team with a solid performance in the
early part of 2012. He hit with a batting average of .298 with 41 RBI’s, 22 stolen bases and going long on five occasions.
His Double-A experience with the San Antonio was not disappointing either. The right-handed hitter hit at .251 with 20 RBI’s, three home-runs and 10 stolen bases. Liriano is currently a part of Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League. He featured in
the AFL Rising Stars game and put in a decent performance, giving indications that the can perform in tough situations. He was playing for the West Team.
His manager at the AFL Dusty Wathan believes that Liriano has what it takes to be an excellent all-round player. He was all praise for the youngster’s arm, power, running ability and fielding skills. The manager believed that he was certainly an asset for
the Padres. “I think the Padres definitely have something special in him. It's nice to have a guy like that have an opportunity to play here and really get to judge him against the best of the best in the Minor Leagues right now," said Dusty.
Rymer understands the responsibility that comes with the top prospect tag. He is looking to be a consistent performer and being calm under the pressure of expectations. He said that he is also seeking advice of the fellow Dominicans playing in the Major
League.
Although it is too early to say when the Padres would give it a serious thought to let the right-hander have a go in the Major League, they will certainly be planning for his future. The San Diego franchise will do well to groom his budding talent and turn
him into a long term asset for the team.
