San Diego Padres add three to 40-man roster ahead of Rule 5 Draft Deadline - MLB News
The San Diego Padres added three of their Minor League players to the 40 man roster to avoid the risk of losing them during the winter meeting in the Rule 5 draft. Padres now have a full 40 man roster.
Those added include pitcher Adys Portillo and outfielders Jaff Decker and Yeison Asencio. Pitcher Cory Burns was out righted for assignment.
On Monday, the San Diego Padres agreed to a pre-arbitration deal with outfielder Kyle Blanks worth $605,000. Kyle took part in four games for the ball club during the 2012 season before landing on the disabled list in mid of April due to a strained left
shoulder. This eventually ended his season after he had arthroscopic surgery in early May.
Jaff Decker could not play for much of the season due to a foot injury. The 22-year-old hit with a batting average .201 in 56 games with rookie-level Peoria and Double-A San Antonio. Jaff was drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2008 and has played 424 games
in the Padres’ farm system.
Decker’s career numbers are better then what he posted this year and his .264 batting average certainly shows his talent. Decker was also named as the 50th top prospect in the MLB.com poll in 2010.
The 23-year-old Yeison Asencio had a pretty fantastic year in 2012. Representing the Fort Wayne Tincaps, Asencio had a .323 batting average with 61 RBI’s and eight home-runs. The Dominican won the Midwest League batting title for his excellent performance
during the 2012 season. Yeison has been associated with the Padres for the last three seasons.
Adys Portillo was ranked as the seventh top prospect for the San Diego Padres. He was signed as a non-drafted free agent in July of 2008. The 20-year-old played for the Class A Fort Wayne in 2012 with a 1.87 ERA and 6-6 win-loss record.
Later he was promoted and skipped the Class A Advanced Lake Elsinore as he went on to play with Double A San Antonio. He went for 8-11 win-loss record and posted a reasonable 3.34 ERA in 26 starts combined for the two teams.
Cory Burns entered the big leagues in 2012 for the Padres. The 25-year-old made 17 relief appearances for the team. He had 0-1 losing record with a 5.50 ERA. Cory was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 2009.
Burns had a decent year with the Triple-A Tucson in 2012 posting 3.12 ERA with a 1-2 record during his 54 relief outings for the team. He also played in the Indians Minor League System where he had a 7-11 record in 184 games.
The Padres have added some good prospects from their Minor League system and the move could pay quite well in the long run for the club.
