San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants prevail – MLB Spring Training
San Diego Padres humbled Chicago Cubs 5-1 at the HoHoKam Park in Mesa, Arizona on Saturday, March 24 in their Cactus League encounter of the 2012 Major League Baseball Spring Training Session.
The Padres looked to attack their rivals right from the start of the contest. Making the most of available opportunities, the Padres applied themselves brilliantly to put themselves in the driving seat. Showing their superiority both offensively and defensively,
the Padres put their opponents under immense pressure. San Diego has now a very respectable 14-9 win-loss record this spring.
After making an ordinary start to their 2012 Spring Training campaign, the Padres looked to be in their comfort zone on Saturday as they secured a comfortable 5-1 win over the Cubs. Padres’ manager was also very pleased with the way his players performed
in a crucial encounter and he aimed to continue their impressive form throughout the season.
The Cubs will consider themselves responsible for their humiliating loss on Saturday. The batting lineup failed to live up to the expectations as the Cubs managed to score just one run. Cubs’ fans will also be disappointed with what they saw from the players.
It will be interesting to see if the Cubs can turn the tables in their upcoming spring game.
San Francisco Giants also secured a deserving 6-4 win over Cincinnati Reds at the Goodyear Ballpark in Goodyear, Arizona in a Cactus League game. San Francisco’s win over the Reds has now improved their spring win-loss record to 13-8.
Cincinnati, on the other hand, was unable to make the most of on hand opportunities. Considering Cincinnati’s average spring win-loss record, Manager Dusty Baker and his men will be looking to reconsider their strategies about before the Opening Day.
Matt Cain played a key role in deciding the outcome of the game as he tossed five scoreless innings to help the Giants establish control over the contest. Allowing just four hits and no walks, he struck out five batters. The starter has given some great
results in minor league system and he will be eager to prove his metal in MLB now.
