San Diego Padres avoid arbitration with two, make offers to three others including Headley- MLB
San Diego Padres have successfully avoided arbitration with two of the eligible players and have made offers to three others. The San Diego ball club will have to speed up the process if they wish to stay out of arbitration as time is running out.
In case of arbitration, which will take place from February 4 to the 20th, the arguments of both sides will be heard and a final decision will be made by the arbitration panel on the basis of their findings. Eventually either the salary
demanded by player or that offered by the ball club will be approved.
Those who sealed the deals include pitcher Edinson Volquez and catcher John Baker. Those to whom new potential salary numbers were given include star third baseman Chase Headley and pitchers Clayton Richard and Luke Gregerson.
Catcher John Baker will continue to have split duties in 2013 with Nick Hundley behind home plate. He will now be making $930,000 in 2013 as opposed to $750,000 that he made in 2012. Last season, he played in a total of 63 games, he posted a batting average
of .238.
Edinson Volquez has got a nice raise for 2013 as he will be getting $5.725 million. He had an 11-11 season last year in 32 starts, posting a 4.14 ERA and making a total of approximately $2.24 million. He will be representing the Dominican Republic in World
Baseball Classic in March.
Luke Gregerson has been offered a salary of $2.875 million by the Padres. The pitcher made a counter offer of $3.75 million. The 28-year-old was a part of the San Diego Padres for 77 games last season, when he earned $1.55 million. He posted a 2.39 ERA with
a low 1.09 WHIP. He has his career best nine saves along with 24 holds in 2012. He is also on the provisional squad of USA for the World Baseball Classic.
Clayton Richard had a fair season in 2012 when he posted a 14-14 record with 3.99 ERA in 33 starts. He has been offered $4.905 million by the Padres while his counter offer is for $5.55 million. He should be getting a good boost from his 2012 salary either
way as he last made $2.705 million.
Chase Headley was the poster boy for the San Diego ball club in 2012. He had 115 RBI’s, the most in the National League and went long 31 times, his career high. His hitting prowess and the good work in the field landed him National League Player of the Month
Award two months in a row and he was one of the factors behind the late resurgence of Padres in 2012.
Chase has been offered $7.075 million while he demands $10.3 million. His last salary was $3.475 million.
It will be interesting to see how matters eventually pan out and whether Padres will need to go into arbitration with these players or not. If they can avoid it, the ball club will certainly benefit from it. The team is showing some great signs of moving
up the ladder and the management should make sure that it continues without a hiccup.
