San Diego Padres await scan results as Chase Headley injures thumb during Spring Training - MLB
The San Diego Padres on Sunday came across a mini scare as their third baseman Chase Headley suffered an injured thumb and it is expected that he may not be available for Opening Day of the 2013 season.
Manager Bud Black is quite clear that Headley is an important player and his presence is important. He said that they are hoping for the best.
"He's a very important player for us," Black said. "We're hoping for the best."
Chase had a golden run of form in 2012. The 28-year-old posted a .286 batting average and a .376 on-base percentage. His 173 hits with the 115 RBI’s and 31 home-runs showed the class Chase possesses. He was the National League’s Player of the Month twice
in consecutive months in August and September.
The Padres hit gold as well in the later part of the season as they won 49 out of the last 86 games, posting a .570 winning percentage. A performance that has greatly enhanced the confidence of the San Diego ballclub moving into the new season.
Black said that Chase got injured during a slide when he got stuck into the ground and twisted as his thumb hit the bag at the base.
"He went to slide into second base and got stuck and twisted around and his thumb ended up hitting the bag ... his thumb was in a bad spot," Black said.
The team is still waiting for the X-rays and some scans to know exactly the extent of the damage that has been suffered by the third baseman’s thumb.
"We're going to have some studies done ... X-rays and maybe some other scans," manager Bud Black said.
Chase won the Silver Slugger Award as well as the Rawlings Gold Glove. His bat swung well and Padres certainly are hoping for a similar display by the switch hitter.
From the fans’ perspective, one hopes that he recovers well and in quick time too to help his team repeat some of the feats from the previous season. The extent of the injury will only be known after the scan results arrive.
