San Diego Padres beat Atlanta Braves 7-6 after ninth inning scare at Petco Park – MLB news
The San Diego Padres survived a late ninth inning scare as they beat the Atlanta Braves 7-6 on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Petco Park.
The hosts controlled the game for the most part before the Braves made a truly brave attempt at winning the game. They scored no less than four runs in the top of the ninth but fell short by one run to force a bottom of the ninth.
The Padres got underway with a groundout RBI by Chase Headley in the first innings. Logan Forsythe playing his first game of the season did not waste much time as he went long on the first at-bat of the season to make the lead 2-0- in the second innings.
The 26-year-old was pleased by the result and knew that the chance was there and he needed to connect well.
“Mechanically, the swing was there,” Forsythe said. “Once I got out here, the timing was the just the biggest thing.”
Manager Bud Black too was pleased by the performance by Forsythe who went 2-for-2 in the ballgame.
“It's great to see a guy right off the get-go make an impact,” Black said.
Will Venable hit a three-run home-run in the bottom of the fourth to give his team a clear lead. The Padres added two more runs in the seventh innings and were ahead by six runs.
However, the Braves got a single run in eighth and another four in the ninth innings to make life just a touch difficult for the home team.
Bud Black did feel that the things did get a bit out of hand in the ninth but the cushion was sufficient enough to keep them safe in the end.
“The ninth inning got away from us a little bit, but we had a big enough cushion,” Black said. “The end result is what you look for.”
Great control was shown by starting pitcher Jason Marquis who recorded his eighth win for the season. Bud was happy the way Jason pitched in nearly eight innings, just giving away a single run.
“He kept the ball down,” Black said. “I thought, overall, good sinker down, and he threw more changeups today than he did in his previous starts. He weaves his way through a game, it's great.”
It was surely a great win for the Padres. However, it is important that they are able to keep the leads intact in future.
