San Diego Padres beat Cincinnati Reds 2-1 – MLB Recap
The San Diego Padres defeated the Cincinnati Reds 2-1 in the first game of their four-match regular series encounter on Thursday, July 5 at Petco Park.
Entire Padres’ roster played as one unit and kept the Reds under pressure to eventually win the game in style.
"Over the last 3 1/2 weeks, the players and coaches sensed we were playing better, Over the last two weeks, you've seen more timely hitting, fundamental defense and the pitching has been fine. There was a determination on both pitchers that might have been
a little bit different than any other game," Padres’ manager Bud Black said on his team’s tremendous effort.
Padres’ bounced back from the Reds early one run advantage and never gave any chance to their opponents to play them easy.
"It's going to be an exciting series, They (were) leading the division, and we are on a streak." said San Diego rookie catcher Yasmani Grandal on his team’s good performance as they carry a six game winning streak.
Edinson Volquez played tremendously for the Padres as he pitched seven innings and received only one run on five hits along with one earned run. He struck-out 10 hitters as his ERA remained consistent at 3.52.
On the other hand, the Reds’ pitcher Mat Latos, despite pitching well could not save the game for his team. He finished his seven innings spell no giving up any runs as his ERA remained also consistent 4.13.
"It's baseball, Today was a grind offensively." Latos said on his unlucky outing.
With this win, the Padres now have a one game advantage in the series.
This is also a very good sign that the Padres have started winning some games. They have recently snatched the fourth position in the National League West.
Almost the entire first half of the 2012 Major League season has been proven a tough ride for the Padres but with recent spirited performances they seem to be feeling much better. Many experts are also speculating in the media that the Padres will be coming
after All-Star break with full thrust and might compete for a possible place in the post season.
The Reds will be disappointed with their efforts as they were unable to make an impact offensively as they lost to the Padres.
