San Diego Padres beat Florida Marlins 4-0 – MLB Update
The San Diego Padres had the best pitchers at their disposal to beat the Florida Marlins 4-0 at Sun Life Stadium on Tuesday, July 19.
The Padres had a solid start of the three-game series with the victory as both defence and offence provided a helpful combination.
But in reality, Tim Stauffer proved to be instrumental in the six innings that he pitched coupled with four other relievers who kept the lead intact until the end of the game. Stauffer nuanced his pitches with their swift speed and variation.
"It has been the same since game one: I'm going out there trying to put up zeros," Stauffer said. "Whether we score no runs or 10 runs, I'm going to pitch aggressively and try to get us back in the dugout as quickly as possible."
When Anibal Sanchez was dispatched to the mound to pitch against the Padres’ hitters, the Florida Marlins’ starter seemed not well-settled and somewhat fatigued. Ryan Ludwick hit and drove in a run to give an early 1-0 lead to the team.
Orlando Hudson followed with his single against the seemingly struggling Sanchez, making it a 3-hit two runs first inning. The rest hinged on how the Padres starter would execute his task.
Stauffer did not disappoint his team manager. He proved himself the best choice with his quality pitches, keeping San Diego’s lead strong and somewhat invulnerable.
"I settled down as the game went on," the right-hander said. "I fine-tuned a couple of things and got a little more aggressive. My last inning was probably my best inning."
Sanchez, on the other hand, had difficulty containing the Padres’ offence. Throwing 119 pitches through the six innings, the Padres seemed to be succeeding in their evasive tactics.
The Padres knew full well where Sanchez had to pitch. In his six innings, he gave up only four hits, having an ERA of 2.83 throughout this season.
Everth Cabrera drove in the third run for the Padres in the seventh inning when Steve Cishek relieved the Marlins’ starter. Cishek could hardly hold a high ground to contain the charged Padres’ offence.
Chad Qualls, coming as a reliever for the Padres, pitched well while Mike Adams, coming as another reliever did his job with another shut-out eighth inning.
"Their man threw strikes," Marlins’ centre-fielder Mike Cameron said. "That allowed him to go to his secondary pitches."
Brian Sanchez was subject to hit by Cameron Maybin who scored a single to take the lead to 4-0 in the top of the ninth inning followed by Luke Gregerson’s shut-out ninth inning for the Padres to win the first of three-game series by 4-0.
