San Diego Padres beat Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 at the Petco Park - MLB News
San Diego Padres beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 comfortably on Friday, June 21, 2013 at the Petco Park in front of a nearly 32000 crowd.
Things took a turn for the worse in the top of the first innings for the hosts when Clayton Richard picked up an injury only second pitch into the game. Tim Stauffer and Tyson Ross took the duties in the game for the bulk of the pitching and did not let the team down.
Manager for the Padres Bud Black said that the two relief pitchers were the key in the game.
"Those two guys were the key to the game," Black said.
Scoring started for the San Diego ballclub with a home-run by Chris Denorfia in the bottom of the first. The Dodgers were already on the scoreboard at this point.
Chase Headley drove in two runs with a triple in the bottom of the third to help his team get a lead. Kyle Blanks made it a 4-1 ballgame with an RBI single.
Chris Denorfia got the fifth run on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh innings. The Dodgers got a run in the top of the eighth but were unable to score any further in the game.
Clayton Kershaw continued to struggle against the Padres as he lost his third game against the San Diego ballclub this season. Chase Headley was pleased with the fact that the batting lineup has got a measure of the pitcher.
"I think we're throwing the whole lineup at him. We've having good at-bats. Fortunately, we've been able to get to him a little bit," Headley said. "We've beat him a few times but we haven't beat up on him."
Don Mattingly, the manager for the Dodgers, agreed that Kershaw has not been able to get a hold of the Padres’ hitters.
"They battle him pretty good. They've seen him a lot. They make him pitch. They foul a lot of balls off," said Mattingly. "[It's] just a tough club for him. They don't punch out a ton. They put the ball in play. They've got guys that match up with him."
It was a great win for the Padres as they are now just two games away from the National League West leaders Arizona Diamondbacks. They are now in the second spot and looking pretty strong.
